At the FENS Forum 2026, Professor Julia Schulz of Saarland University presented new research uncovering genetic differences in brain cells that may explain why Parkinson's disease is more common in men. The study analyzed postmortem brain samples from 73 Parkinson's patients and 24 controls, finding sex-specific differences in glial cell gene activity related to mitochondria and myelin. The German Research Foundation will launch a 'SEX and GLIA' program in autumn 2026 to further investigate. The findings, not yet peer-reviewed, suggest potential for personalized treatments.
