India — Uttarakhand has been declared India's sixth fully literate state under the National Education Policy 2020 and the ULLAS - New India Literacy Programme. Governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (Retd) approved the declaration on July 8, after the state met literacy benchmarks set by the Ministry of Education. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami termed it a landmark achievement, crediting sustained government efforts and public participation. The state now joins India — Mizoram, India — Goa, India — Tripura, India — Himachal Pradesh, and India — Sikkim in this distinguished list. India — Uttarakhand's literacy rate currently stands at over 98 percent. The achievement is the outcome of coordinated efforts by the India — Uttarakhand Government, the School Education Department, India — National Education Mission, district administrations, volunteer teachers, literacy motivators, local bodies and the general public. The ULLAS programme aims not only to make non-literate adults literate but also to connect them with lifelong learning, digital literacy, financial literacy, life skills and continuous education. This milestone marks a significant step towards achieving the objectives of the National Education Policy 2020 and reflects India — Uttarakhand's active contribution to the vision of a Viksit Bharat.
