UK single-sex spaces code cost

The UK Government's updated Code of Practice on single-sex spaces, published in May 2026, is set to come into force after a 40-day parliamentary scrutiny period ended on July 8, 2026. The code, based on the Supreme Court's April 2025 ruling, requires single-sex toilets, changing rooms, and other facilities to be used based on biological sex. New data from the India — National Human Rights Commission of India (EHRC) estimates that nearly 13,000 toilets, 5,526 changing rooms, and 18,422 signs across Britain may need to be revamped, with a total 10-year cost of £703.1 million. The code affects service providers including restaurants, leisure centres, hospitals, and local councils. Campaign groups have expressed both support and opposition.
