The event may increase demand for sexual health services and antibiotics, but the rise of drug-resistant strains could strain healthcare resources. No direct stock market impact is expected.

A study led by the University of Cambridge and the United Kingdom — UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) found that sexually transmitted shigella, a bacterial gut infection causing severe diarrhoea, is spreading rapidly in the UK and becoming increasingly antibiotic-resistant. In 2025, England recorded 2,560 cases, up from 2,318 in 2024 and 2,052 in 2023. The research, published in The Lancet, analyzed 3,514 samples from 2004-2020 and found that sexually transmitted strains spread more than twice as fast (117 km vs 46 km over 2.5 years) and had higher antibiotic resistance (70% vs 40% for non-sexual cases). The infection primarily affects gay and bisexual men. Experts call for distinct surveillance and prevention strategies.
