The acquisition consolidates Salzgitter's position in the German steel industry and aligns with the green transition trend. The restructuring and job cuts may weigh on sentiment, but the long-term focus on low-emission steel could attract ESG-focused investors.
Salzgitter AG has reached a final agreement to acquire 100% of Salzgitter AG — Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann (HKM) from its co-shareholders ThyssenKrupp — ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe and Vallourec. The contracts were signed on July 8, 2026, with closing and transfer of shares scheduled for the same day. Salzgitter plans to invest in an electric arc furnace at the Duisburg site to reduce CO2 emissions by 90% and will restructure HKM, reducing the workforce from approximately 3,000 to about 1,000 and crude steel production to 2 million metric tons per year by end of 2028. The acquisition is part of Salzgitter's strategy to focus on green steel production.
