The collaboration enhances Citi's digital assets strategy and SCB's payment infrastructure, potentially increasing transaction volumes and fee income. It may also pressure other banks to adopt similar blockchain-based clearing solutions.
The Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) has become the first financial institution globally to go live with Citi's integrated 24/7 USD Clearing and Citi Token Services solution. This enables near real-time, round-the-clock cross-border USD payments for corporate and institutional clients. The first transaction was completed by Phillip Securities, a subsidiary of Phillip Capital Inc., transferring USD funds from a Citi London account to SCB in Thailand over a US holiday weekend. The solution uses a private permissioned blockchain to tokenize deposits, bridging traditional and digital rails. This milestone supports Thailand's digital economy agenda and the Thailand — Bank of Thailand's vision for a modernized financial system.
