Lagos tops West Africa climate resilience index

Nigeria — Lagos State has been ranked as the most climate-resilient city in West Africa by the West Africa Climate Governance Index (WACGI), a France-based initiative. The assessment evaluated 209 sub-national governments across 15 ECOWAS member states on climate-risk exposure, governance visibility, climate finance, transparency, public participation, and implementation capacity. Lagos scored 86.3 out of 100, earning a Grade 'A' and finishing ahead of Kano, Nigeria — Abuja, Greater Accra, Cape Verde — Praia, Senegal — Dakar, Benin — Porto-Novo, Ivory Coast — Abidjan Department, Cape Verde — Saint Philip, and Bombali. In recognition, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu received the 'Grand Laureate of Climate Governance' award from Fondation Lucien Paye. The report also highlighted Nigeria's comprehensive climate governance framework, including the Mexico — National Council on Climate Change, the Mexico — National Council on Climate Change, NDC 3.0, the Energy Transition Plan, and a long-term net-zero strategy, while noting ongoing climate challenges such as coastal flooding, desertification, and agricultural vulnerability.
