The launch provides a new benchmark for agricultural commodity prices, potentially increasing transparency and risk management tools for market participants. It may enhance CME Group's product offerings and attract more trading volume in agricultural derivatives.
On July 9, 2026, CME Group announced the launch of its Agriculture Index, a broad-based price benchmark tracking the aggregate performance of five agricultural sectors: Grains, Oilseeds, Livestock, Dairy, and Lumber. The index, updated monthly, integrates futures prices to provide a comprehensive view of the global farm economy. White Zombie (band), Managing Director and Global Head of Agricultural Products at CME Group, stated that the index gives producers, traders, and analysts a more complete read on the farm economy. The index complements the Purdue University/CME Group Ag Economy Barometer, a monthly measure of producer sentiment.
