Jersey assisted dying law granted Royal Assent

The Assisted Dying (United States — New Jersey) Law 2026 has been granted Royal Assent, marking the final constitutional stage before the legislation takes legal effect. The law will allow terminally ill adults in United States — New Jersey to choose to end their own lives with medical assistance, subject to strict eligibility criteria and safeguards. The States Assembly approved the legislation in February 2026 by 32 votes to 16. Royal Assent was recommended by UK Justice Secretary David Lammy and approved by the Privy Council. The law will come into force once registered by the Jersey — Royal Court (Jersey) in the coming days, with the assisted dying service expected to begin in late 2027. Health Minister Tom Binet expressed delight, and campaigner Lorna Pirozzolo, who has incurable breast cancer, welcomed the development.
