The establishment of a centralized asset recovery agency is expected to improve Nigeria's anti-corruption framework, potentially enhancing investor confidence. However, the immediate market impact is limited as the bill is still subject to further legislative approval.
The Nigerian Senate on Thursday passed the Proceeds of Crime Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026, establishing the Nigeria — Proceeds of Crime Recovery and Management Agency to recover, preserve, manage, and dispose of assets linked to unlawful activities. The bill, sponsored by Senator Idiat Adebule, aims to centralize asset management currently handled by about 18 agencies, improving transparency and accountability. The Senate also passed the Legal Practitioners Act (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2026, to modernize legal profession regulation. Both bills now go to the House of Representatives for concurrence before presidential assent.
