The approval signals increased government spending on security infrastructure, which may benefit security-related companies and improve investor confidence in Nigeria's ability to address insecurity. However, the funding is sourced from statutory allocations and taxes, potentially impacting corporate profits and VAT revenues.
The Nigerian Senate has approved a combined N403.1 billion (approximately $404 billion) for the Nigeria — Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) budgets for the 2025 and 2026 fiscal years. The approval covers N170.1 billion for 2025 and N233.9 billion for 2026, aimed at strengthening policing and combating terrorism, kidnapping, and other security challenges. The budgets were presented by the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, with over 90% allocated to capital expenditure. The approval follows legal delays that prevented implementation of the previously approved 2024 budget. Separately, President Bola Tinubu transmitted a bill to the Senate seeking reform of the criminal justice system, including establishment of a Criminal Justice Monitoring Council. The Senate also recently passed the Police Trust Fund Act (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2026, which increases statutory allocation to the NPTF from 0.5% to 1% of Federation Account revenue.
