The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is experiencing a major Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus, declared on 15 May 2026. As of early July, over 1,700 infections and 600 deaths have been reported in the DRC, with 20 confirmed cases in neighboring Uganda. The outbreak is spreading beyond Ituri province due to conflict and displacement, making containment difficult. No approved vaccine exists for this strain, though trials of antibody and antiviral treatments began in early July. The United Nations has released $60 million for response, and the World Health Organization is working with MONUSCO to supply equipment. UN relief chief Tom Fletcher has called for faster international action, warning that delays will cost lives.
