Gravitate analysis: AI Overviews cut CTR 58%
Analysis based on 6 articles · First reported Jul 09, 2026 · Last updated Jul 13, 2026
The analysis highlights a structural shift reducing organic search traffic, pressuring businesses reliant on SEO and publishers dependent on Alphabet Inc. referrals. Companies in digital marketing and online publishing may need to adapt strategies as AI Overviews diminish the value of top rankings.
On July 9, 2026, digital marketing agency Gravitate released an analysis synthesizing data from Ahrefs, Pew Research Center, SparkToro, Gartner, and Press Gazette/Chartbeat, showing that Alphabet Inc.'s AI Overviews are accelerating a decade-long decline in click-through rates from search results. The report found that when an AI Overview appears, the first organic result's click-through rate drops 58% compared to when no AI Overview is present, based on Ahrefs' December 2025 data. Pew Research Center's March 2025 behavioral study observed that only 8% of search sessions with an AI Overview resulted in a click on a traditional link, versus 15% without. Overall, 68% of U.S. Alphabet Inc. searches now end without a click (SparkToro/Similarweb 2026), up from 60.45% two years earlier. Publisher referral traffic from Alphabet Inc. fell roughly 33% globally in 2025, with Business Insider losing 55%, Forbes and HuffPost each losing about 50%. The analysis also notes that Alphabet Inc.'s March 2024 core update reduced low-value content by 45%, and Gartner predicts 25% of search queries will shift to AI chatbots by 2026.
