A study by the University of Southampton, published in Environment International, found that ultrafine particulate matter from cruise ships burning fuel in ports increases inflammation and weakens cells' defense against viral infections like COVID-19 and the common cold. The research, led by Nat Easton and Matthew Loxham, sampled air at Southampton port and identified vanadium, nickel, and cobalt as markers of cruise ship emissions. Lab tests showed these particles promote viral replication. Associated British Foods (ABP) expressed concerns about the study's methodology, while Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) noted the industry's commitment to reducing emissions. The study calls for better monitoring and regulation of ultrafine particles.
