On July 17, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off India's first hydrogen-powered train from India — Jind, India — Haryana. The train operates on the 89-km India — Jind-India — Sonipat route, using indigenously developed hydrogen fuel cell technology that produces only water vapor and heat as by-products. The 10-coach train can carry up to 2,600 passengers at a design speed of 110 kmph (operational speed 75 kmph). India — Indian Railways developed the propulsion system under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, with safety certification from TÜV. A hydrogen production, storage, and refuelling facility has been set up at India — Jind, approved by PESO. India joins Germany, Japan, China, and the United States in operating hydrogen trains. The launch supports India's National Green Hydrogen Mission and net-zero goals. Additionally, PM Modi dedicated the India — Delhi-India — Amritsar-India — Katra Expressway and virtually inaugurated the redeveloped Tikamgarh railway station.
