The arrest may temporarily boost confidence in Nigeria's financial system's ability to combat cybercrime, but the scale of fraud (N52.26 billion in 2024) continues to pressure banks and regulators. Increased scrutiny on cybersecurity spending and fraud prevention measures is expected.
The Nigeria — Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU) in Lagos arrested Adeleke Hafees, a suspected member of a cybercrime syndicate, for allegedly using Point-of-Sale terminals and other tools to gain unauthorized access to a financial institution's database and execute fraudulent transactions worth over N3 billion. The proceeds were laundered through multiple bank accounts. The PSFU used digital forensics to trace transactions and recover evidence. Commissioner Eloho Edwin Okpoiakpo commended the team and directed efforts to arrest other syndicate members. This arrest highlights growing concerns over financial fraud in Nigeria, where banks lost N52.26 billion to fraud in 2024 according to NIBSS.
