The labeling system may increase transparency for consumers and reduce confusion around AI-generated music, potentially benefiting streaming platforms by building trust. However, voluntary adoption may limit immediate market impact, and enforcement remains a challenge.
On July 10, 2026, several major music industry organizations, including the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), announced a voluntary labeling system for content created with generative AI. The system includes two labels: 'AI-generated' for recordings where AI created the entirety or primary creative elements, and 'AI-assisted' for recordings substantially created by humans but containing some AI-generated elements. The labels aim for broad global adoption on streaming services. Deezer already flags AI tracks, and Spotify launched a 'Verified by Spotify' label in April. The News Media Association expressed support for improved metadata transparency.
