A study presented at the Alzheimer s Association International Conference (AAIC) 2026 in London found that former elite professional soccer players show evidence of brain health changes in mid-life. The study, led by Grace Lynch of Imperial College London and the UK Dementia Research Institute, included 142 former players and 56 controls. Former players reported higher levels of depression and anxiety, and MRI scans revealed lower gray matter volume in brain regions related to memory and decision-making. Additional studies at AAIC 2026 linked heading exposure to biomarkers of neural injury and CTE risk.
