India and Japan held the 8th Defence Policy Dialogue in Tokyo on July 13, 2026, co-chaired by Indian Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar and Japanese Vice Minister of Defence for International Affairs Koji Kano. The dialogue reviewed the entire spectrum of bilateral defence engagements, including military-to-military exchanges, maritime cooperation, defence exercises, and defence equipment and technology cooperation. Both sides discussed deepening cooperation in emerging domains such as defence industrial collaboration, technological innovation, cyber security, and space. They reaffirmed their commitment to a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific region and to strengthening the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership. Defence Secretary Singh met Japanese Defence Minister Shinjirō Koizumi and extended an invitation for him to visit India. The dialogue followed Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's visit to India in early July and set the stage for the upcoming 2+2 ministerial meeting later in 2026.
