On July 13, 2026, Bangladesh Health Minister Sardar Shakhawat Hossain Bakul informed Parliament that over 92% of people with mental health conditions in Bangladesh receive no treatment, citing the National Mental Health Survey 2018-19. The survey found 16.8% of adults and 12.6% of children/adolescents suffer from mental disorders. Bangladesh has only 1.17 mental health workers per 100,000 people and about 350 public-sector psychiatrists. The government is implementing the Mental Health Act, the National Mental Health Strategic Plan (2020-2030), and WHO-backed programs like mhGAP in 10 districts and suicide prevention in 4 districts. Bangladesh is one of nine countries selected for WHO's Special Initiative for Mental Health. The minister also noted 1,000-1,400 annual suicides, many among youth.
