A study from the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of Keck Medicine of USC, presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research, found that young non-smokers under 50 who eat healthier diets may have a higher risk of lung cancer. Researchers suspect pesticide residues on conventionally grown produce could be a factor, though the link is unproven. The study included 187 patients diagnosed by age 50, most never-smokers, with a biologically distinct form of lung cancer. Their average Healthy Eating Index score was 65 vs. the national average of 57. Experts urge caution, noting the findings are preliminary and require further research.
