Benue State attacks kill 20

A series of attacks in Nigeria — Benue State, Nigeria, between July 12 and 14, 2026, resulted in at least 20 deaths in the communities of Nigeria — Otukpo-Nobi, Akpachi-Ugboju, and Ondo Ugboju. The attacks, which occurred after a funeral and in separate incidents, have been blamed on suspected armed herders by local residents and Governor Hyacinth Alia, but the Miyetti Allah (MACBAN) denies involvement, noting that Fulani herders were evicted from the area in 2025. The Nigerian Senate, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, passed a motion sponsored by Senator Abba Moro calling for immediate deployment of security forces, investigation by the Nigeria — Nigeria Police Force, and relief provision by NEMA and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs. Amnesty International reported at least 10 killed in one attack and criticized the government's response. MACBAN Secretary Ibrahim Galma urged the public to avoid premature conclusions and called for monitoring of social media to prevent escalation. The attacks have raised fears of a food crisis as farmers abandon their land.
