The milestone signals increased domestic supply of DR-grade iron ore, potentially reducing import reliance and benefiting U.S. steelmakers. However, the event is company-specific and unlikely to move broader markets significantly.
Mesabi Metallics Company, an Essar Group company, successfully completed its first production blast at its iron ore mine in United States — Nashwauk, Minnesota, on July 13-14, 2026. The blast fractured approximately 211,000 tons of ore, marking the transition from preparation to production. The company aims to produce DR-grade pellets under the 'Patriot Pellet' brand, reducing U.S. dependence on foreign supply. The project represents a $2.5 billion investment and is the first new iron ore mine and pellet plant in United States — Minnesota in fifty years.
