The warning may accelerate investment in cybersecurity and AI risk management by Canadian banks, potentially increasing costs in the short term. However, proactive regulatory guidance could reduce long-term systemic risk and support stable operations.

Banking Cybersecurity Artificial Intelligence

Canada's federal banking regulator, the Canada — Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI), warned the country's largest financial institutions about the cybersecurity risks of Anthropic's Claude Mythos and other advanced AI models. In an email sent in April to chief technology officers, chief information security officers, and chief risk officers across the financial industry, OSFI stated that such models significantly compress the timeframe for effective risk mitigation. The warning followed urgent meetings in the United States where Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and then-United States — Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell convened bank CEOs to discuss similar risks. OSFI also published a public bulletin on generative and agentic AI. The Canadian government has access to Anthropic's Project Glasswing, which provides access to Mythos, but it is unclear which banks are using it. Banks including Royal Bank of Canada, TD Bank, and BMO have outlined plans to earn millions from AI investments, while building their own AI defenses.
