Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the Technical University of Denmark have developed the first true three-dimensional thermal cloak that can conceal objects from infrared cameras and protect them from extreme temperatures. The device guides heat around an object regardless of the heat source direction, using a hybrid material of 3D-printed aluminum lattice and a rubber-like insulator. Published in Nature Communications, the cloak was tested with complex shapes including head-like geometries. The work was funded by the United States — National Science Foundation, the Villum Foundation, and the United States — Air Force Research Laboratory. Future plans include smart cloaks that can actively manipulate heat.
