Positive results could spur development of new dementia treatments, benefiting pharmaceutical companies focused on neurology. However, the treatment is not yet approved, and further studies are needed before market entry.

A first-of-its-kind clinical trial, the LiBBY trial, found that a combination of purified THC and CBD significantly reduced agitation in patients with late-stage dementia. The study, presented at the Alzheimer s Association International Conference in London on July 14, 2026, enrolled 120 hospice-eligible participants with Alzheimer's disease or other dementias. After 12 weeks, close to 90% of those receiving the treatment showed improvement. The medication was well-tolerated with adverse event rates comparable to placebo. Researchers caution that the formulation differs from commercially available THC/CBD products.
