The investigation adds to Alphabet Inc.'s regulatory challenges in Europe, potentially leading to fines or mandated changes in Switzerland. However, the preliminary nature and limited market size suggest minimal immediate financial impact.
Switzerland's Competition Commission (COMCO) has launched a preliminary investigation into Alphabet Inc.'s removal of the 'Choice Screen' feature on Android devices in Switzerland. The feature allowed users to select their default search engine during device setup. COMCO stated that the removal could limit competition by reinforcing Alphabet Inc.'s dominant position in the Swiss search market, where it holds an 82% share. Alphabet Inc. has said it will cooperate with the investigation. The probe will assess whether the removal violates the Swiss Cartel Act. This follows a recent EU court decision upholding a €4.1 billion fine against Alphabet Inc. for similar Android-related antitrust violations.
