NWIA demands probe into Habila death

The Nigerian Women International Alliance (NWIA) has called on President Bola Tinubu to ensure an independent, transparent, and credible investigation into the death of physiotherapist Mary Habila, who reportedly died at the residence of Minister of Works David Umahi. In an open letter dated July 13, 2026, signed by President Omolara Abike, Vice President Ogonna Chiedum, and Secretary Mariam Adeosun, the NWIA stressed that while investigations are ongoing, the circumstances require a thorough probe to strengthen public confidence. The group warned that failure to conduct a credible investigation could damage Nigeria's reputation for the rule of law and erode investor confidence. Minister Umahi has dismissed claims of secrecy, stating that the incident was reported to police and that he ordered an autopsy with the consent of the deceased's parents. He also threatened legal action against those spreading false reports. The NWIA's demands include preservation of forensic evidence, protection for witnesses, and transparency in handling findings.
