MC College gang rape verdict

On July 14, 2026, Judge Swapan Kumar Sarker of the Bangladesh — Sylhet Division Speedy Trial Tribunal sentenced Saifur Rehman to death and Mahbubur Rahman, Tarequl Islam, and Arjun Laskar to life imprisonment for the 2020 gang rape of a woman at Murari Chand College hostel. Four other accused were acquitted. The case, which sparked nationwide outrage and led to the passage of the Women and Children Repression Prevention (Amendment) Act 2020, had stalled under the previous government but resumed after the 2024 political change. The tribunal heard 25 witnesses, including the survivor and her husband.
