India and the Maldives successfully concluded the first round of negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in virtual mode from June 29 to July 7, 2026. The talks covered eight policy areas across eight technical sessions, with both sides making substantive progress and reaching broad convergence on several issues. On July 8, Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal met Maldivian Minister Mohammed Said to review progress and reaffirm commitment to expedite both the FTA and a Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT). The two countries are marking 60 years of diplomatic relations. Bilateral trade grew 13.54% to $771.76 million in 2025-26. The proposed FTA aims to enhance market access, facilitate investment, and promote economic cooperation.
