The CEO transition signals continuity and strategic focus on AI-driven digital infrastructure, which may positively impact Zayo's market positioning. The appointment of a seasoned telecom executive is likely to be viewed favorably by investors and customers.
Zayo Group announced a planned CEO transition, appointing former Verizon executive Sowmyanarayan Sampath as Chief Executive Officer, effective September 1, 2026. Sampath will succeed Steve Smith, who will retire as CEO after a tenure that established Zayo as a leading digital infrastructure network provider. Smith will remain on Zayo's Board of Directors. The transition is positioned to support Zayo's next phase of AI-driven growth. Sampath brings over two decades of experience, most recently as CEO of Verizon Consumer, and previously leading Verizon Business and BCG's global telecom practice. During Smith's tenure, Zayo more than tripled its fiber expansion to over 15,000 route miles and completed the acquisition of Crown Castle's Fiber Solutions Business, adding approximately 90,000 route miles and 40,000 on-net enterprise locations.
