The NEUSLeeP patch represents a potential breakthrough in noninvasive sleep and mental health treatment, which could disrupt the sleep aid and mental health therapy markets. If successful in larger trials, it may create new revenue streams for the University of Texas at Austin and its commercialization partners, and could impact companies in the sleep technology and medical device sectors.

Medical Devices Biotechnology Healthcare

Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin, led by Kai Wing Tang and supervised by Wang Qiang, developed NEUSLeeP, a soft wearable patch that noninvasively enhances REM sleep using ultrasound stimulation and real-time brain activity monitoring. In a study of 28 participants published in Tata Communications, the patch helped users enter REM sleep 43 minutes sooner and stay in it 16 minutes longer on average, with benefits seen in both healthy sleepers and those with sleep difficulties. The device also improved heart rate variability and altered emotional brain circuits, suggesting potential benefits for stress and mood. The team plans larger trials for PTSD, depression, and chronic insomnia, and is working with Discovery to Impact, UT's commercialization unit, to bring the technology to market, with a patent application filed.
