The trial represents a potential breakthrough for Gilead Sciences if obeldesivir proves effective, but the ongoing outbreak poses risks to regional stability and healthcare systems. Market attention is moderate given the early stage of the trial and the localized nature of the outbreak.

The World Health Organization has launched the first clinical trial (EBO-PEP) of the antiviral obeldesivir, developed by Gilead Sciences, for post-exposure prophylaxis against the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The outbreak, declared on May 15, has infected over 1,960 people and killed more than 700, with cases in five DRC provinces and neighboring Uganda. The trial aims to recruit nearly 1,000 participants aged 12 and over who have had close contact with confirmed cases. Separately, a treatment trial evaluating MBP134 and remdesivir began on July 2. WHO officials warn the outbreak may be two to four times larger than official figures, with 80% of new cases from unknown transmission chains.
