A study published in JAMA and presented at the Alzheimer s Association in London found that a blood test measuring p-tau217 levels can predict the risk of developing Alzheimer's symptoms in cognitively healthy older adults over the next 5 to 10 years. The research, led by Mass General Brigham, analyzed data from 2,684 participants across six cohorts in North America, Japan, and Australia. Those with very high p-tau217 levels had a 38% risk of cognitive impairment within 5 years and up to 78% within 10 years. Experts caution that the test is not yet ready for widespread use in asymptomatic individuals, but it could aid in clinical trial enrollment and future preventive treatments.
