The investment strengthens UnionBank's capacity to finance sustainable projects and MSMEs, potentially boosting its green asset portfolio and reputation. It also supports the development of the Philippine capital market for sustainable finance, which may attract further international investment.
The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the World Bank Group's investment arm, has committed $100 million to UnionBank (Philippines)' (UnionBank) first sustainability bond. The proceeds will be used to expand lending to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and finance green projects such as renewable energy, energy efficiency, and green buildings. The bond adheres to the International Capital Market Association's Sustainability Bond Principles. This follows IFC's previous investment in UnionBank's first social bond in 2021. IFC is also providing technical support through its 30 by 30 Zero Program to help UnionBank diversify its sustainability portfolio. The investment is part of efforts to deepen local capital markets in the Philippines.
