The National Population Commission (NPC) of Nigeria announced the nationwide rollout of the VitalReg digital platform for birth and death registration under the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (e-CRVS) system, operational since July 1, 2026. NPC Chairman Dr. Aminu Yusuf disclosed that birth registration coverage stands at 57% and death registration below 20%, with an estimated five million births annually. The platform aims to modernize registration, provide 24-hour online access, digital certificates, and integrate with Nigeria's digital identity ecosystem. The NPC has established 4,011 registration centers, planning to expand to 8,000, and partnered with ALGON, NIMC, UNICEF, and Barnksforte Technologies. Fees for specialized services were reviewed, but birth registration remains subsidized. Commissioner Eyitayo Oyetunji described the transition as a historic milestone since 1988.
