Kogi School Abduction During NECO Exam

On July 14, 2026, gunmen attacked Government Secondary School, Olowa, in Dekina Local Government Area, Nigeria — Kogi State, during the ongoing Nigeria — National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination. The attackers abducted the school principal, Daniel Iyanaa; a NECO official, Solomon; and two female candidates, Dorcas Sunday and another student identified as Dorcas. One student was rescued shortly after the attack. The Nigeria — Kogi State Government, led by Governor Ahmed Ali, launched a multi-agency security operation involving the Nigeria — Nigerian Army, Nigeria — Nigeria Police Force, United States — United States Department of State, Nigeria — Kogi State Vigilante Service, and local hunters. The operation, coordinated by State Security Adviser Jerry Omodara, deployed advanced technology and saturated the forest area, forcing the kidnappers to abandon the victims. All four remaining victims were rescued safely on July 16, 2026. The incident sparked controversy when Nigeria — Kogi State officials and military commander Godiya Solomon Monde alleged the school was a 'miracle centre' for examination malpractice. NECO, through its acting director Azeez Sani, denied the allegation, stating the school is a legitimate state-owned institution that has existed for over 40 years and has presented candidates for NECO exams since 2000. NECO also confirmed the victims were bona fide students and staff. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar condemned the abduction, criticizing the federal government's handling of security and education. The National Parent Teacher Association called for implementation of the Safe Schools Initiative.
