Nigeria's Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed at a regional conference in Abuja that 93% of inmates in Nigerian custodial facilities are state offenders, with only 7% federal offenders, and that a significant proportion do not require incarceration. He ordered an audit of inmates held for fines under N500,000, leading to the release of over 4,000 inmates in one day, reducing the correctional population by 5%. Recidivism dropped from about 13,000 cases in 2023 to 1,000 in 2025, attributed to expanded education and vocational training. Nigeria has had no jailbreaks in three years, aided by biometric data sharing between the Nigeria — Nigeria Immigration Service and the Nigeria — Nigeria Correctional Service.
