14yo charged with mosque terror plot

A 14-year-old boy has been charged with a terrorism offence under section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006 for allegedly planning to target two mosques in Sutton, south United Kingdom — London. The United Kingdom — Metropolitan Police arrested the boy on July 9 on suspicion of criminal damage to a vehicle, but during a search of his address, officers discovered documents of concern linked to extreme right-wing terrorism. He was subsequently charged with preparation of terrorist acts and racially aggravated criminal damage. The boy, who cannot be named due to his age, has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at United Kingdom — Westminster Magistrates Court on July 16. Police have contacted the affected mosques and are providing support. There is no believed wider threat. Commander Helen Flanagan of United Kingdom — Counter Terrorism Policing described it as a very serious charge and noted an increasing number of young people in terrorism casework. The incident follows other recent anti-Muslim incidents in the UK, including 12 arrests for a suspected threat to an Islamic festival in Suffolk and a stabbing rampage in Edinburgh.
