A study published in Science Translational Medicine by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Chicago demonstrates the long-term safety and stability of intracortical microstimulation for restoring touch in people with spinal cord injuries. Over five volunteers with a combined 27 years of implant time and 168 million stimulation pulses, no serious adverse events occurred. Sensations remained localized to the hand, and persistent sensations were rare. Electrode functionality declined over time, with 64% remaining functional on average. The research was funded by multiple NIH institutes and DARPA.
