India-Nepal Power Sector Cooperation Review

India and Nepal held the 13th meeting of the Joint Steering Committee on Power Sector Cooperation in Pokhara on July 15, 2026, co-chaired by Pankaj K. Agarwal (India) and Sarita Dawadi (Nepal). The meeting reviewed progress on hydropower projects, power trade, and transmission infrastructure, including the 400 kV Gorakhpur-New Butwal line. Both sides discussed expediting ongoing and future projects, coordinated grid operations, solar energy development, green hydrogen cooperation, and capacity building for Nepali experts. A preceding Joint Working Group meeting was held on July 14. Indian Power Secretary Agarwal also called on Nepal's Energy Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha. The discussions aim to strengthen bilateral energy ties and enhance cross-border electricity connectivity.
