ICMR drone cuts TB diagnosis time and cost

The study demonstrates a scalable model for reducing healthcare costs and improving diagnostic speed in remote areas, potentially benefiting companies involved in drone logistics and healthcare delivery. However, the direct market impact is limited as the initiative is still in pilot phase and not yet commercialized.
The India — Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) conducted a study in India — Telangana's Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri district under its i-DRONE initiative, in collaboration with AIIMS Bibinagar and the District TB Office under the India — National Malaria Elimination Programme (NTEP). The study enrolled 840 participants and compared conventional TB diagnosis with a drone-enabled system that transported sputum samples from Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and sub-centres to TB diagnostic laboratories via a hub-and-spoke network. Results showed that the median turnaround time for TB diagnosis dropped from 15 days to 5 days, and the mean out-of-pocket expenditure for patients fell from approximately Rs 9,451 to Rs 91. The median expenditure during the drone phase was zero. Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Secretary of the Department of Health Research and Director General of ICMR, highlighted the role of technology in bridging geographical barriers. The study also noted operational challenges such as weather conditions and payload limitations, and called for further implementation in diverse settings.
