The fraud highlights risks in venture capital investments in emerging markets, potentially dampening investor sentiment towards agritech startups. KWAP's loss may lead to stricter due diligence requirements for Malaysian pension funds.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated in a parliamentary reply that Malaysia — Employees Provident Fund (KWAP) was deceived into investing approximately RM200 million (US$47.7 million) in Indonesian aquaculture startup EFishery due to a premeditated fraud involving manipulation of financial statements by EFishery's management. The investment was made in July 2023 after due diligence and verification by internationally accredited auditors. Other major investors including Temasek, SoftBank, 42XFund, and Mariner Wealth Advisors also fell victim. EFishery co-founder Gibran Huzaifah was sentenced to nine years' imprisonment in Indonesia for criminal breach of trust and money laundering. The investor consortium, including KWAP, has initiated legal action and fund recovery efforts. KWAP has conducted a comprehensive review of its investment processes and implemented improvements.
