The nationalisation secures domestic steel supply for UK infrastructure and defence, but raises concerns about long-term profitability and taxpayer costs. The move may impact trade relations with China and affect Jingye's other investments.
The UK government has nationalised British Steel, the country's last primary steel producer, to protect steelmaking capacity and jobs. The Steel Industry (Nationalisation) Act 2026 received royal assent, allowing the transfer of shares and property into public ownership. The move follows the government's intervention in April 2025 to prevent closure of the Scunthorpe blast furnaces after Chinese owner Jingye Group declared the plant financially unviable. A new leadership team has been appointed to stabilise the business and transition to low-carbon steel production. An independent valuer will assess compensation for Jingye. The government has also published a Steel Strategy backed by up to £2.5bn investment to support the sector.
