Seven & i to buy Zabka stake

Seven & i shares rose over 4% on the news, while Zabka shares surged 16% to a record high. The potential deal signals Seven & i's commitment to overseas expansion, which could offset weakness in its U.S. and Japanese markets.
Seven & i Holdings is in advanced negotiations to acquire a double-digit percentage stake in Poland's largest convenience-store operator, Zabka Group, for several hundred billion yen. The deal would accelerate Seven & i's European expansion, adding Poland as its fourth European market after Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. Zabka operates nearly 13,000 stores in Poland with about 11% of the domestic grocery retail market. The investment aligns with Seven & i's goal to expand its global footprint to 30 countries by 2030. The company has been under investor pressure to improve returns after an unsolicited takeover bid from Alimentation Couche-Tard in 2024. Seven & i is also considering selling a stake to SoftBank and PayPay to boost growth. The talks are ongoing and may not result in a deal.
