The expansion could increase trading volume and interest in Kalshi's platform, potentially attracting new users from the biotech sector. However, regulatory scrutiny and concerns about insider trading may limit growth.
Kalshi Inc., a prediction market platform, announced an expansion into biotechnology by offering wagers on clinical trial outcomes and FDA regulatory decisions. The move, in partnership with AI firm AppliedXL, includes 13 new biotech contracts on drugs from companies like Sanofi and Gilead Sciences. Kalshi also filed documentation with the CFTC to offer flight cancellation rate contracts using FlightAware data. The company released a white paper on prediction markets in drug development, featuring input from 23andMe co-founder Anne Wojcicki and former Eli Lilly scientist Alpheus Bingham. Kalshi plans to implement safeguards such as employment verification and listing contracts only after trial enrollment closes to prevent insider trading. Critics raise concerns about market manipulation and addiction, while Kalshi emphasizes compliance and transparency.
