Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann handed over licences to 2,800 new ration depot holders on July 17, 2026, expanding the state's public distribution network. The licences were allotted through an interview-based selection process, with representation for Scheduled Castes, Other Backward Classes, ex-servicemen, freedom fighters, persons with disabilities, and riot-affected families. The government provides free wheat and Meri Rasoi ration kits to 40 lakh families under the Smart Ration Card Scheme. Mann also criticized previous governments, including the India — Indian National Congress and India — Shiromani Akali Dal, for alleged political favoritism in depot allotments, and questioned the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee over posters calling for his boycott.
