The news signals a realistic but slower-than-expected entry of India into semiconductor manufacturing, which may temper near-term expectations for the country's chip ambitions. However, the government's continued financial support and Tata's long-term commitment could gradually strengthen India's position in the global semiconductor supply chain.
Tata Group, the tech arm of the Tata Group, is preparing to build India's first large-scale semiconductor fabrication plant at Dholera, Gujarat, initially using 90-nanometer process technology—older than the 28nm node previously touted. The company has partnered with Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) for its chipmaking debut. The Indian government approved ₹1.28 trillion ($13.3 billion) in new state aid for chip design and manufacturing, complementing an earlier $10 billion package. The Dholera fab, with a planned capital expenditure of $10.7 billion, is expected to start commercial operations in mid-2028, later than the initial target of end-2026. The shift to older technology highlights the challenges India faces in building a domestic chip industry from scratch, as the country lags behind leaders like Taiwan and South Korea.
