The study highlights the effectiveness of agri-environmental policies, which could influence agricultural investment and regulatory trends. Improved soil quality supports long-term food security and may reduce volatility in crop yields, benefiting agricultural commodity markets.

A global study led by Guyo Dureti and David Wuepper at the University of Bonn, published in Nature Food, analyzed satellite data from 2001 to 2019 across 83 million pixels to assess the impact of national agri-environmental policies on cropland soil quality. The study found that financial incentives for farmers and direct regulations such as crop rotation and wildflower strips have significantly slowed soil degradation and improved biomass. Success depends on strong institutions, low corruption, and adequate funding. The research was funded by the Australia — Australian Research Council and the German Research Foundation.
