The unrest may deter investment and tourism in the region, but direct impact on broader markets is limited. Telecom companies face operational challenges due to internet shutdowns.

Since June 2026, Pakistan-administered Kashmir (PoK) has experienced a wave of unrest led by the Pakistan — Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), an umbrella group of traders, activists, and others. The protests initially over food and utility prices escalated into a dispute over 12 legislative seats reserved for Kashmiri refugees, which the JAAC demands be abolished. Pakistan banned the JAAC under anti-terrorism laws in June and arrested several leaders. Clashes on July 14 killed nine people, including seven civilians and two security personnel, bringing the total death toll to around 31. The United Nations Human Rights Council and High Commissioner Volker Türk have called for investigations, de-escalation, and inclusive dialogue, expressing concern over the ban, internet restrictions, and human rights violations. India's Ministry of External Affairs criticized Pakistan's handling of the region. Regional elections are scheduled for July 27.
